Diabetes Do’s and Don’t’s

9:30 AM

Now that you Know More About Diabetes and Diabetes Management - below are a few additional "Do's" and "Don'ts" to keep in mind when managing diabetes....

DON’T Fear Carbohydrates:

Carbohydrates are an important part of a balanced diet for those with or without diabetes.  Carbohydrates are found in starchy foods like rice, pasta and breads and are also present in grains, fruits, milks and starchy vegetables such as potatoes and corn.  According to The American Diabetes Association (ADA) individuals with diabetes should take in approximately 45-65% of their total calories from carbohydrates.

DON’T seclude yourself from eating with others:

While people with diabetes should monitor their daily nutritional intake, there are food foods that are completely off limits.  People with diabetes should make sure that they are getting a balanced portion of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, but really, any health conscious person should do the same.

DO Keep Up Physical Activity:

Activity is an important part of a healthy routine for any person, particularly those with diabetes.  The American Diabetes Association recommends at least 150 minutes per week or an average of 20 minutes per day of physical activity with moderate intensity.

DO Keep Your Weight in Check:

For those who have diabetes and are overweight, a weight loss of even 5% of the total body weight can lead to significant improvements in glucose control.  Those with diabetes should ask their doctor to recommend an ideal weight and/or weight loss plan.

As with any other disease, it is important to check with a physician before starting any treatment or diabetes management routine.
